My name is Alison Shannon and I am the owner/operator of Transcription Online.
The business has been operating for ten years. I have had over 25 years’ experience working for law firms in the Waikato region and Auckland City. From the time I graduated with a trade certificate I started my working life with a law firm in Te Aroha and have continued to work for law firms throughout my career. I have carried out a number of tasks including secretarial, reception, typing, trust account administration, property settlements, Company Office searches, gifting programmes, wills and estate work.
In 2007 due to family circumstances and the desire for a change I set up my own business as an outsource typing. All this was made possible by changing and developing technology and the ways in which people worked.
We accept all types of assignments and have previously undertaken work for government departments, hospitals, university research, student post-graduate research projects, lawyers, barristers, accountants, writers, journalists, life stories, retailers, tradespeople, valuers, and numerous others.
Our interviews have ranged from one person to multi-speaker focus groups. We have also undertaken projects for Maori organisations and Pasifika organisations and groups. The majority of our work is dictated into a digital voice recorder and emailed to us or uploaded using a file upload server, for us to transcribe and email back. We will however type from handwritten notes and have carried out a number of projects in this way where handwritten notes are scanned to us to be typed. We are available for your day to day typing needs and for assignment work. If you have a backlog of work, just don’t have time to see to the typing aspect of your research project, or need to outsource work for whatever reason, we are here to help.
This business is English as a first language and a high standard of written English is maintained. Great care is taken with correct spelling and grammar, and all transcripts are proofread and edited.
My charge-out rate starts at $30 per hour.
Example: If your audio recording is clear and of good quality it takes approximately one hour to type 15 minutes of audio. Therefore a one-hour audio recording would take a minimum of 4 hours to transcribe. Time also needs to be allowed for proofreading and editing. For a one-hour recording we allow one hour to proofread the transcribed document. Therefore the cost at $35 per hour would be $175.00.
There are a number of factors that can mean it can take longer than this to transcribe audio. These include such factors as the quality of recording, recording with a number of participants such as focus groups for example, placing of microphones, background noise and overlapping voices.
